We asked them to tell us the exact moment it became OK to take dogs on shopping trips.<\/p>\n<p>No one pinpointed exactly when that was, but many speculated it is tied to the growth in the number of legitimate service animals to treat a growing number of disabilities defined by the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ada.gov\/archive\/qasrvc.htm#:~:text=If%20you%20are%20not%20certain,her%20medical%20condition%20or%20disability.\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Americans with Disabilities Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ContentBlocks_CardDetail__SubscribeBlock__4zBcQ ContentBlocks_CardDetail__SubscribeBlock--mobile__18tT_\">\n<section class=\"styles_SubscribeForm__0dj5n\">\n<h2 class=\"styles_SubscribeForm__title__F_olP\">Find out what&#8217;s happening in Across America<span class=\"styles_SubscribeForm__title--nextLine__FTO3K\">for free with the latest updates from Patch.<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>Respondents were in agreement that legitimate service dogs aren\u2019t an issue. They\u2019ve been through extended training to remain calm but alert and fixed on their partner\u2019s needs. They are not troublemakers.<\/p>\n<p>Many retail and hospitality businesses, such as grocery stores and restaurants, have become more accepting of dogs that may not be officially recognized as service animals. It can be uncomfortable for store managers to request proof, and the people who rely on service animals are unlikely to be walking around with documentation regarding their medical conditions, a couple of readers said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ContentBlocks_CardDetail__SubscribeBlock__4zBcQ ContentBlocks_CardDetail__SubscribeBlock--desktop__oN6vv\">\n<section class=\"styles_SubscribeForm__0dj5n\">\n<h2 class=\"styles_SubscribeForm__title__F_olP\">Find out what&#8217;s happening in Across America<span class=\"styles_SubscribeForm__title--nextLine__FTO3K\">for free with the latest updates from Patch.<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>And some people fake their documentation with internet downloads and buy vests designed to look like the real thing, <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-hampshire\/nashua\">Nashua (New Hampshire) Patch<\/a> reader Jynx pointed out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople who buy fake service dog vests for pets or who use a pet an \u2018emotional support animal,\u2019 which is not a service dog, do a disservice to those who need actual service dogs,\u201d Jynx said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<h3>\u2018Dog Fight In The Meat Department\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely nothing is OK with bringing the family dog grocery shopping,\u201d said Babs, who reads <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/connecticut\/greenwich\">Greenwich Patch<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/connecticut\/stamford\">Stamford Patch<\/a>, both in Connecticut. \u201cIt is just wrong, inconsiderate and a public health and safety issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPoop cleanup in Aisle 9,\u201d Babs deadpanned. \u201cDog fight in the meat department\/pet food aisle.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>Poop and dog slobber were big sticking points with survey respondents \u2014 for example, Grace, a <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/california\/carlsbad\">Carlsbad (California) Patch<\/a> reader, who said that \u201cwhen a dog\u2019s butt or face or saliva is going to be in contact with anything I own, it is too much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love animals but I wouldn\u2019t let my toddler\u2019s butt that has just pooped on your shopping cart where your food is going to be,\u201d Grace said. \u201cAnd I wouldn\u2019t let my kids slobber on a table where your food is going to be or where you are going to sit. So why do I want your dog doing that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mj, an <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/oceancity\">Ocean City (New Jersey) Patch<\/a> reader, has seen some things and cannot unsee them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA great example of the wrong in allowing pets in stores is what I observed in an area grocery store this past year. A man was carrying his bulldog in his arms. Of course, the bulldog was doing what is normal for a bulldog to do, saliva dripping from his snout,\u201d Mj said. \u201cThis person held the dog over the meat counter while picking out his meat selection and, of course, you can imagine what was happening to the saliva coming from the dog\u2019s mouth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mj inquired about the store policy regarding companion animals. Only legitimate service animals are allowed, but the store manager doesn\u2019t enforce the policy, Mj said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/minnesota\/farmington-mn\/subscribe\">Farmington (Minnesota) Patch<\/a> reader Jane is grossed out by what she\u2019s seen, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the dumbest thing stores could allow,\u201d Jane said of the growth of open-door policies to dogs, adding, \u201cI would be sick if a dog came and pooped in the aisles and then drug its ass around to clean it \u2014 and I am buying food?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is never OK,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/cinnaminson\">Cinnaminson (New Jersey) Patch<\/a> reader Ric said.<\/p>\n<p>If people who can\u2019t be away from their dogs long enough to go shopping should have their groceries delivered, Ric said.<\/p>\n<p>They certainly shouldn\u2019t act entitled or think everyone should love their dog as much as they do, other readers pointed out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>\u201cPeople are self-centered and think only about themselves in this matter,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/illinois\/plainfield\">Plainfield (Illinois) Patch<\/a> reader Niecy said. \u201cNot everyone loves your pet like you do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlmost ran over a dog in the aisle with my cart as I didn&#8217;t see it,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/wall\">Wall (New Jersey) Patch<\/a> reader Aussieusa said. \u201cBut the owner seemed to think I was the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Dog Sits On Open Cases Of Meat<\/h3>\n<p>Bierce, a <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/morristown\">Morristown (New Jersey) Patch<\/a> reader, chimed in with the leave-dogs-at-home crowd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI once went into anaphylaxis due to fuzzy cat fur or dander. Also, pets should not be taken near meat, fish, deli, or other open food counters,\u201d Bierce said. \u201cIf every shopper brought a pet, the store would become a zoo of birds, cats, dogs, and other four-legged pets. And what if the pet gets loose? Leave them home!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/maryland\/severnapark\">Severna Park (Maryland) Patch<\/a> reader Pete has this image seared into his eyeballs:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>\u201cI saw an owner of a small dog cutting up chicken on her plate and putting it on another plate and letting the dog sit on her lap while its paws were on the restaurant\u2019s table eating from the restaurant\u2019s plate. The restaurant was full of people at other tables.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, come on, that is absolutely ridiculous,\u201d Pete said, ticking off a list of maladies a dog might spread. \u201cLet\u2019s stop this nonsense. Dogs are dogs, not humans. They should be left home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen dogs sit on open cases of meats and produce, as well as urinating and defecating in various different places in a grocery store, including on the shelves, and the owner just walked away,\u201d said LBJ, who reads multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/connecticut\/across-ct\">Across Connecticut Patch<\/a> sites, including <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/connecticut\/vernon\">Vernon Patch<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/manchester-nj\">Manchester Patch<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/connecticut\/mansfield\">Mansfield-Shorrs Patch<\/a>.\u201d Absolutely disgusting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some people don\u2019t have much room to talk, according Susy P, who reads <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/tomsriver\">Toms River Patch<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/berkeley-nj\">Berkeley Patch<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/pointpleasant\">Point Pleasant Patch<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/manchester-nj\">Manchester Patch<\/a>, all in New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur shoe bottoms are filthy, people pick their nose and then handle produce, and only one out of six people wash their hands after toileting,\u201d Susy P said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<h3>Dogs Are Always Licking Themselves<\/h3>\n<p>Our question struck a sharp nerve with Zie, who reads <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/california\/redlands\">Redlands-Loma Linda (California) Patch<\/a> and longs for the good, old days when everyone knew it wasn\u2019t OK to take non-service animals into grocery stores, restaurants and malls.<\/p>\n<p>Zie just deals with it, despite a very long list of reservations. What if the dogs have lice, ticks or other parasites? What if they had been bitten by a rabid animal and didn\u2019t show symptoms until they tore into another shopper or that person\u2019s pet? <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the unsolicited licking that sticks in Zie\u2019s craw. Not everyone wants to be licked by a dog that has licked itself all over, or to touch a cart handle the licker has licked. It\u2019s the dog\u2019s bum in the child seat in the cart, too, especially if the dog had diarrhea or something. These are all potential problems. <\/p>\n<p>And don\u2019t even get Zie started on that time someone brought a baby pig into Costco, put it in the child seat where she usually puts her purse and other food items \u2014 although she does raise a valid question: \u201cI wondered why it was permitted and how it was healthy, and why, then, can\u2019t everyone bring in all their animals: snakes, spiders, rodents, etc.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Zia just wants an animal-free zone when she shops. But she keeps quiet and vents her frustrationat the keyboard. It is safer that way.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>\u201cNowadays, one never knows who will become indignant or angry if anyone objects to the inconvenience or fear it brings them,\u201d Zie said. \u201cOne is forced to endure others&#8217; entitlement choices for fear of an aggressive owner or bystanders verbally attacking or videoing and villainizing one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/westorange\">West Orange (New Jersey) Patch<\/a> reader George thinks fears of an out of control dog dropping a deuce near the meat counter or a louse jumping from a dog\u2019s coat to a kid\u2019s head are overblown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI used to be in retail management (home improvement) where the rule was no dogs, but I did not enforce it and never had any incidents of urine, feces, bites, bad behavior from dogs, or complaints from other customers,\u201d George said.<\/p>\n<h3>Does The Dog Even Want To Shop?<\/h3>\n<p>The answer to our Block Talk question may be what\u2019s best for the dog, said Pamgirl, a <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/morristown\">Morristown (New Jersey) Patch<\/a> reader.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour dog doesn&#8217;t want to go to all the places you think it wants to go. They\u2019d rather stay home and do dog things. They need time alone, too,\u201d Pamgirl said.\u201d People have begun to think of dogs as people that like everything that they like. I love my two dogs but they don&#8217;t like the car and, after a few tries, I&#8217;ve realized that they probably never will so I respect that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>\u201cDogs aren\u2019t people, and I say this as a dog lover and former dog owner,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/california\/venice\">Venice-Mar Vista (California) Patch<\/a> reader MelleMel said. \u201cYou aren\u2019t doing your dog any favors by making it helpless being alone. There are plenty of places they can go; the grocery just shouldn\u2019t be one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/pennsylvania\/uppermoreland\">Upper Moreland-Willow Grove (Pennsylvania) Patch<\/a> reader thinks whether dogs should or should not be in stores depends on the dog.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the dog is disruptive and barks a lot, then no, it should not be allowed,\u201d the reader said. \u201cIf the dog is well-behaved and does not attempt to interact with other shoppers and possible animals, then yes it could be allowed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no problem with pets in a pet store, a garden center or nursery or a home improvement center. And, I even find it \u2018fun\u2019 to dine with these furry friends on an outdoor patio,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/florida\/dunedin\">Dunedin (Florida) Patch<\/a> reader Jersey Girl said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut, pets (unless they are \u2018official\u2019 service animals) should never be allowed indoors in any location that sells food items,\u201d Jersey Girl said. \u201cThis is unsanitary and is the reason pet crates have been made. The crate keeps the animal safe until its owner returns home.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>Katie, a <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/chatham\">Chatham (New Jersey) Patch<\/a> reader, is pleased to see more place allowing animals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe they can do so much good and are very therapeutic,\u201d she said. \u201cI used to teach high school and I believe that an occasional visit from my dog would have really reduced the stress among the students and staff and would have been something for everyone to really look forward to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI personally would love to be able to take my dog everywhere I go. She is definitely a member of my family,\u201d Katie said. \u201cHowever, you have to know your dog well \u2014 how the dog does in public places, and whether it is likely that she\/he will do his\/her business in the establishment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is 2025, and we all treat pets as family members,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/connecticut\/stamford\">Stamford (Connecticut) Patch<\/a> reader GMMG said. \u201cMy Frenchie comes with me everywhere and I don\u2019t feel comfortable leaving her locked in the car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/florida\/sarasota\">Sarasota (Florida) Patch<\/a> reader Isabella doesn\u2019t see any reason why a well-trained and behaved dog that fits in the grocery cart child seat shouldn\u2019t be allowed.\u201cOften these sweet pets bring joy to other shoppers,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>\u201cIf the dog is well-behaved and not in contact with store merchandise, it should be OK,\u201d said Monica, who reads <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/manchester-nj\">Manchester Patch<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-hampshire\/bedford-nh\">Bedford Patch<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-hampshire\/concord-nh\">Concord Patch<\/a>, all in New Hampshire. \u201cMy fur babies are very social, and I often put him\/her in a carriage with a wrap.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s fine to take small, obedient dogs into stores and restaurants, according to Rachel, who reads <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/illinois\/beverly-mtgreenwood\">Beverly-Mt. Greenwood Patch<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/illinois\/evergreenpark\">Evergreen Park Patch<\/a>, both in Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was in Paris, France in the mid-\u201980s and I couldn\u2019t believe all the dogs in restaurants,\u201d Rachel said. \u201cBig dogs and small dogs. And they were all well-behaved.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018We Allow Kids In Stores\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Shadow threw shade on kids.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen they ban 3- and 4-year-old kids from the supermarket, then they can ban dogs,\u201d said the <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/illinois\/oakpark\">Oak Park (Illinois) Patch<\/a> reader who now lives in St. Louis. \u201cAt least the canine is on a leash.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/florida\/dunedin\">Dunedin (Florida) Patch<\/a> reader Flo is right there with Shadow. \u201cWell behaved dogs are much more appreciated than out of control children who run through the aisles screaming and grabbing things off of the shelves,\u201d Flo said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/virginia\/oldtownalexandria\">Old Town Alexandria (Virginia) Patch<\/a> reader Kayla is OK with dogs in stores, and even restaurants \u201cas they are leashed and under control, meaning they\u2019re not barking at other customers or other dogs, getting into the shelves, licking items, making a mess on the floor, etc.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe allow kids in stores even though, in my experience, they can be much more badly behaved and far more obnoxious than dogs are,\u201d Kayla said.<\/p>\n<p>Lee, a <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-york\/southampton\">Southampton (New York) Patch<\/a> reader, said it\u2019s best to leave dogs at home, but better to bring them inside than to leave them in a hot car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople take kids into food stores,\u201d Lee said. \u201cGermy kids who poke holes in food wrappers.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>As long as the dog is well-behaved it should be allowed in any store or establishment, said <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/parsippany\">Parsippany (New Jersey) Patch<\/a> reader Burr. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look at them the same as children,\u201d Burr said. \u201cIf your kid or dog is running around like a Tasmanian devil then you should take responsibility and not bring them places.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/pennsylvania\/yardley\">Yardley (Pennsylvania) Patch <\/a>reader Brian thinks dogs should be allowed in all stores, including restaurants. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDogs are family,\u201d he said. \u201cThey treat you better than people, including family. When a pet dies, the grief and sorrow is just the same or worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ladiesadie44 would like a word about that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>\u201cI was a pet owner (not a pet parent),\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/brick\">Brick (New Jersey) Patch<\/a> reader said. \u201cThe term \u2018pet parent\u2019 is insane. It gives permission to people to act as they would if they had a child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been witness to animals peeing and pooping in stores and the owner just walking right on by. I have seen animals sitting on top of tables in restaurants (not under, not next to, not on the chair but sitting directly on top of the table) while their owner ate their meal with the dog sitting right next to the plate. I have seen animals in shopping carts being strolled around the store and then those same carts being used for groceries and children. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s time for common sense rules to be put into place,\u201d Ladiesadie44 said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/hackettstown\">Hackettstown (New Jersey) Patch<\/a> reader Jo brought up another problem. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI own an antique shop and you wouldn\u2019t believe how many people I turn away because I don\u2019t want big dogs in my shop. One wag of a big hairy tail can cost them big time if they wipe out a shelf of antique china, etc.,\u201d Jo said. \u201cLeave your dogs home! I don\u2019t drag my cats around with me and I\u2019d never bring a dog if I had one.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<h3>But Are Cats OK?<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/florida\/stpete\">St. Pete (Florida) Patch<\/a> reader Janette long ago grew \u201ctired of seeing people\u2019s little pampered dogs in the grocery carts with their feet and butts where I put my food.\u201d And it bugs her when people take their dogs into a restaurant when they pop in to order food and they try to jump on the other customers in line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are pets. Leave them at home,\u201d Janette went on. \u201cI\u2019m gonna start taking my large lizard everywhere. See how people like that. Lol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt annoys me that people feel so entitled to take their dogs to restaurants and grocery stores,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/california\/murrieta\">Murrieta (California) Patch<\/a> reader Lorie said. \u201cShould I take my cat, I imagine I\u2019d be questioned, OMG! But you don\u2019t dare question anyone about their dog.
