They\u2019ve toured with an E Street Band member. They were on \u201cFamily Guy\u201d and in \u201cDumb and Dumber To.\u201d And they just rocked Boston (again).<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"a-photo m-article-header__photo\"><figcaption class=\"a-photo__caption\">\n\tSteve Smith, left, and his band The Nakeds toured with Clarence Clemons of the E Street Band from 1983 until Clemons passed away in 2011.<em> Courtesy Photo<\/em>\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/header>\n<p>One August night in 2019, Peter Farrelly took his buddy Bill Murray to see one his favorite bands.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Steve Smith and The Nakeds were playing a private show for the residents of Roy Carpenter\u2019s Beach in South Kingstown, Rhode Island.<\/p>\n<p>Farrelly, a seasonal Martha\u2019s Vineyard resident, brought his buddy to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/lifestyle\/names\/2019\/08\/12\/bill-murray-crashes-beach-party-after-hunting-for-pierogies-fall-river\/LmkZTsRkvIk6kHPPW9AziL\/story.html\"> eat pierogis in Fall River<\/a>, then hit up the beach show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter said to me, \u2018You\u2019re gonna let Bill sing?\u2019 I said, \u2018Absolutely. What song should I do?\u2019 He said, \u2018Do \u201cGloria.\u201d Do you want me to tell him?\u2019 I said, \u2018No, I\u2019m just gonna start playing it,\u2019\u201d Smith tells me.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Murray \u201cwas out in the crowd. He was like a dog. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/stevesmithandthenakeds\/\">Insta bio<\/a>: \u201cOn tour since 1973.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>Sure, they\u2019ve recorded some albums, they\u2019re on Spotify and social media \u2014 but that\u2019s not what defines them. It\u2019s their live-in-person shows \u2014 rollicking and regular and always a packed house.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For 51 years, the Nakeds just keep on keepin\u2019 on. Another night, another bar, club or, recently, Italian fest in the North End.<\/p>\n<p>Born in North Providence in 1951, Smith grew up in Smithfield, and graduated from Providence College in 1973. In the \u201970s Steve Smith &#038; the Nakeds had a stronghold on the New England college scene. (\u201cYou name it, we played there.\u201d)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since the \u201980s, they\u2019ve played bars and clubs from Boston to Falmouth, Newport to South Kingstown. They dominated the Cape bar scene in the \u201980s. They played for Bill Clinton, toured with E Street\u2019s late, great<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/e-street-bands-clarence-clemons-dies-at-69-100145\/\"> Clarence Clemons<\/a>, and were inducted into the<a href=\"https:\/\/rhodeislandmusichalloffame.com\/site\/?page_id=398\"> Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame<\/a> in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>And they keep on truckin\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>When I ask Smith about the quote on his website home page, \u201cTil the Phone Stops Ringing\u2026\u201d he explains: \u201cThat\u2019s what I tell people when they ask me how long I\u2019m gonna do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Friday night, they brought the rockin\u2019 blues to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.madonnadellacava.com\/\"> Madonna Della Cava Society festival<\/a> in Boston\u2019s North End, a regular gig for them these last few years. Next up? A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenakeds.com\/\"> full calendar<\/a> of Rhode Island shows, from Narragansett to Westerly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I called Smith at his Smithfield home recently. In our conversation, Smith laughed often at old memories, spoke with a chowdah-thick southern \u201cr\u201d-less New England accent (Roy Carpenter\u2019s is Roy Cahpintah\u2019s) as we talked bar gigs, Farrelly movies, E Street Band, \u201cFamily Guy,\u201d and Narragansett Beer can Christmas tree decorations, and the ups and downs of being one of the longest-running bar bands in New England.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bill-murray-jumped-on-stage-with-you-guys-a-few-year-back-at-roy-carpenter-s-beach-you-grew-up-summering-there-with-your-extended-family\"><strong>Bill Murray jumped on stage with you guys a few year back at<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.matunuckbeachproperties.com\/\"><strong> <\/strong><strong>Roy Carpenter\u2019s Beach<\/strong><\/a><strong>. You grew up summering there with your extended family.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>My cousin John [Cafferty of the Beaver Brown Band] and I grew up in the same beach house in Matunuck [a village in South Kingstown] every summer \u2019til I was 12. It was a battle every summer to see who was gonna get the new Beatle album first. As soon as we got it, it was on the record player in the beach house, listened to from one end to the other. Then he started taking guitar lessons, and I was singing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-did-you-start-singing-nbsp\"><strong>When did you start singing?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>At the beach house on Saturday night. It was three families living in one house. My Uncle John would get us up in front of the refrigerator on Saturday night, get all the aunts and uncles to come over, and we\u2019d all have to perform something \u2014 tell a joke, do a magic trick, something \u2014\u00a0 in front of the refrigerator before bed.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-that-s-awesome\"><strong>That\u2019s awesome.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>My first performance was a cover of \u201cLove Letters in the Sand\u201d by Pat Boone in front of the refrigerator when I was 4.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-i-love-this\"><strong><em>[laughs]<\/em> I love this.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><em>[laughs] <\/em>My father said I had a gift, and sent me to voice lessons when I was 7.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-did-you-like-lessons\"><strong>Did you like lessons?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>It was kind of weird because, Saturday afternoon, all the kids would be in the street playing baseball, football. Here I was going to<em> voice lessons.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-right-but-you-stuck-with-it\"><strong><em>[laughs] <\/em>Right. But you stuck with it.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>I stuck with it. I think my longevity \u2014 51 years now of the band\u2014 is because I did take those lessons. Even after college at PC, I studied with a couple of different teachers at the Rhode Island School of Music at the Biltmore in Providence.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-you-started-the-nightcrawlers-when-you-were-around-13-what-inspired-that\"><strong>You started The Nightcrawlers when you were around 13. What inspired that?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>We were all in love with the Beatles. Our other tradition, John and mine, was in the winter, we\u2019d go to the movies every Saturday. Our first exposure to Black music was [1964 music doc] \u201cThe T.A.M.I Show.\u201d It had all the up-and-coming stars: The Supremes, Jan and Dean, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones. I didn\u2019t have a scholarship, so I had to work at the iron foundry, go to practice, go to work, then study. I almost flunked out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So I quit hockey, and joined a band, Bloody Mary. Instead of working 40 hours a week in the foundry \u2014 pouring iron, stuff like that\u2014\u00a0 I\u2019d work Friday and Saturday night and make twice as much. Then my senior year, I was asked to join Naked Truth. They heard me sing, and asked if I wanted to join. I\u2019d always wanted to be in a horn band.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-did-you-get-such-a-cult-following-so-early\"><strong>How did you get such a cult following so early?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Back then, the drinking age was 18, and there were clubs everywhere. We played seven nights a week. Each fall, we\u2019d play 25 to 30 colleges. From March to graduation, we would play another 25 to 30. On a spring break weekend, we\u2019d play URI, Quinnipiac, Yale, Southern Connecticut, Southern New Hampshire, Dartmouth.<\/p>\n<p>We gigged everywhere, you name it: Boston College, BU, Stonehill, Southern Connecticut, Northeastern, URI, Bryant, Johnson and Wales, Wheaton. Wheaton back then was all women. So we enjoyed that one.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-so-you-were-never-a-cover-band\"><strong><em>[laughs] <\/em>So you were never a cover band?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Our focus was always to record and to write our own music. So we\u2019d play covers, but we\u2019d slip in an original without announcing it was ours. There was a band in Long Island called Naked Truth. Kids would say, \u201cHey, we went to see you guys on Long Island and it was another band.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So we decided we were gonna put out cease and desists to all the bands calling themselves Naked Truth. We had our lawyer research. He came up with 1,500 bands on the East Coast alone.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs\"><strong><em>[laughs]<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Would\u2019ve cost us a fortune. So we just changed the name.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-you-were-big-in-the-boston-area\"><strong>You were big in the Boston area.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>We played everywhere \u2014 House of Blues, Bunratty\u2019s, Katy\u2019s in Kenmore Square,\u00a0 Jonathan Swift\u2019s in Cambridge. The Rathskeller. Cape Cod was a stronghold for us, especially Falmouth. In 1985 we were on this promotion for Miller Beer. They picked 16 bands from all over the country to promote Miller High Life. We represented the northeast with Boston\u2019s The Del Fuegos.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-some-highlights-looking-back\"><strong>What are some highlights looking back?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Playing for President Clinton. Touring with Clarence Clemons from the E Street Band.\u00a0 He wrote songs for our \u201cNever Say Never\u201d album; so did Nils Lofgren. You had songs in \u201cDumb and Dumber To\u201d and \u201cThe Greatest Beer Run.\u201d<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Here\u2019s the deal: The Farrelly brothers used to follow the band before they were the Farrelly Brothers.\u00a0 They were our biggest fans. Used to come to Falmouth every summer to see us.\u00a0 Then they became the Farrelly Brothers. We\u2019ve been in two of their movies. But every summer, no matter where Peter Farrelly is, he comes to see the band. We were supposed to be in \u201cOutside Providence.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wait-what-i-love-that-movie-nbsp\"><strong>Wait what? I <\/strong><strong><em>love<\/em><\/strong><strong> that movie.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>We were going to cover all the tunes in that movie for the soundtrack. Then Peter got Alec Baldwin and George Wendt, and they upped the music budget.\u00a0 So they ended up using the original tracks. But every time Peter does a movie, he has the music director call us.<\/p>\n<p>Danny was the first writer Seth McFarlane hired.\u00a0 In 2008 they were going to use \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=3&#038;v=JI4ljmLvLbU&#038;embeds_referring_euri=https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=%2527m+Huge+and+the+Babes+Go+Wild.+family+guy&#038;rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS916US916&#038;oq=%2527m+Huge+and+the+Babes+&#038;source_ve_path=Mjg2NjY\">I\u2019m Huge and the Babes Go Wild.<\/a>\u201d But Seth is really particular about music. Danny presented it to him, and he didn\u2019t get it. But they put it on the DVD. out?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>We just recorded a new song yesterday, actually. It\u2019ll be up on our Spotify as a single in the next week or so. It\u2019s called, \u201cDon\u2019t Call Us, We\u2019ll Call You.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-you-have-so-many-upcoming-gigs-you-guys-don-t-stop-nbsp\"><strong>You have so many upcoming gigs. You guys don\u2019t stop.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>We try. You know, COVID really put a hit on the entertainment industry. It hasn\u2019t recovered yet. We\u2019re hurting in the winter because, like a lot of the clubs we used to play either went belly up or they don\u2019t have bands anymore. We lost four clubs in the pandemic. Others close now at 11 p.m. instead of 1 a.m.\u00a0 So I would just tell people to get out and support live entertainment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-true-and-your-website-says-you-re-the-official-band-of-narragansett-beer\"><strong>True. And your website says you\u2019re the \u201cOfficial Band of Narragansett Beer<\/strong>.\u201d<\/h4>\n<p>Next year will be the 20th year we\u2019ve been doing that. We used to promote Narragansett in the \u201970s and \u201980s \u2014 that\u2019s how we got the Miller job.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 1983 the Narragansett brewery closed. In 2004, I got a call that I should talk to the kid bringing it back: Mark Hellendrung. We have a meeting. He goes, \u201cSo what are you proposing?\u201d I said: Well, before the brewery closed, we promoted Narragansett to the point where it was on our rider for every show to get three cases. Our initiation to the Nakeds back in the day was you had to go on a tour of the brewery.\u00a0 We\u2019d come out of there s\u2014faced.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-0\"><strong><em>[laughs]<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>My trumpet player, we called him \u201cThe Kid.\u201d So we take The Kid for initiation, bring them home, and I throw them in the door.<em> [laughs]<\/em> Like 20 minutes later, I get a phone call. It\u2019s his father, right? <em>[laughs]<\/em> We called his father \u201cThe Cobra.\u201d I pick up the phone, he goes, \u201cSmitty. This is the Cobra.\u201d I think: \u201cI\u2019m screwed.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-right-0\"><strong><em>[laughs]<\/em> Right.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>He goes, \u201cYou take my son to the brewery and get him all bombali and don\u2019t invite me!?\u201d He was pissed!<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-that-s-awesome\"><strong><em>[laughs] <\/em>That\u2019s awesome.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>But anyway, I told Mark that story. Told him a few more. Like I used to hang Narragansett cans on my Christmas tree as ornaments every year in the band house. When I got married, I\u2019m still hanging up the beer cans. My wife would give me s\u2014 every year. It would be like a fun spat in front of the kids, whether I could hang my beer cans on the tree.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-i-love-this-0\"><strong><em>[laughs] <\/em>I love this.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>I told Mark these stories, he\u2019s like \u201cAll right, let\u2019s do it.\u201d That was 2005. So in 2005, we\u2019re setting up the Christmas tree.
