Since its inception in 1919, it has become the largest Italian religious festival in New England, according to the feast\u2019s website.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The feast brings together North Enders, residents from across Boston, and tourists from around the world looking to participate in the \u201cold world\u201d atmosphere and traditions the neighborhood has preserved. The 105th Saint Anthony\u2019s Feast will be held Aug. 22 through Aug. 25.<\/p>\n<p>Saint Anthony\u2019s Feast runs deep in Aluia\u2019s blood, too. He was born on the Friday night of the three-day feast, and took the middle name \u201cAnthony\u201d to reflect the connection. <\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s been a part of the feast for \u201call of [his] life\u201d and joined Saint Anthony\u2019s Club, a private social club that sponsors the feast, when he turned 21. The cafe was established in 1929 and is Boston\u2019s first Italian cafe, according to their website. The cafe is spread across four levels, has three liquor bars, and a cigar room. Aluia will order a <strong>cappuccino<\/strong> or an <strong>espresso<\/strong> and a <strong>biscotti<\/strong> for breakfast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If he\u2019s in the mood for a more substantial breakfast, he\u2019ll head to <a href=\"https:\/\/modernpastry.com\/\"><strong>Modern Pastry<\/strong><\/a> (<em>257 Hanover St<\/em>.) for an <strong>American breakfast<\/strong> from Modern Underground, a \u201cspeakeasy type\u201d bar beneath the pastry shop. He\u2019ll head to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salumeriaitaliana.com\/\"><strong>Salumeria Italiana<\/strong><\/a> (<em>151 Richmond St<\/em>.) for cold cuts, cheese, and maybe a sandwich. A \u201csalumeria\u201d is a cured meat shop or Italian deli. He recommends their <strong>sausages<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For his vegetables, he\u2019ll head to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AlbaProduce\/\"><strong>Alba Produce<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>(<em>18 Parmenter St<\/em>.), formerly called Rosario\u2019s. The shop was named after owner Rosario Mogoverro, who sold the store to the current owner Albie Alba. Agrippino, like Aluia, was a born and raised North Ender, and the two grew up together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went to school with his sister-in-law and we all know each other. Robert does one of the best food tours in the city,\u201d Aluia said.<\/p>\n<p>The tour starts at the <strong>Tony DeMarco Statue<\/strong>, located on Hanover and Cross Streets, and lasts between two and three hours, making stops for traditional Italian food and drinks at several mom-and-pop shops and historic locations in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-afternoon-feast-street-vendors-and-the-italian-riviera\">Afternoon: Feast street vendors and the \u201cItalian Riviera\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>On this perfect day, Aluia will spend his afternoon at <strong>Saint Anthony\u2019s Feast<\/strong>, where he\u2019ll take in the fanfare, food, and lively atmosphere. He also recommends a beer garden located at the corner of Thacher and Endicott Streets, across from the Stella Cheese Culinary Pavilion.<\/p>\n<p>The feast is the only time throughout the year that Regina Pizzeria offers outdoor dining, Aluia said. Regina\u2019s North End location was founded in 1926, making it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/food\/wickedpedia\/2023\/02\/13\/oldest-italian-restaurant-north-end-boston-ma\/\">Boston\u2019s oldest pizzeria<\/a>. On the menu is the <strong>Saint Anthony pizza<\/strong>, a white pizza with garlic sauce, sausage, peppers and onions. Aluia will sit in the piazza with his pizza and a glass of wine or beer while he listens to live music and watches the festivities.<\/p>\n<p>For a lunch option outside of the feast grounds, Aluia recommends <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/galleria-umberto-boston\"><strong>Galleria Umberto<\/strong><\/a> (289 Hanover St.). He used to work at the restaurant in his youth, and recommends the <strong>chicken milanese<\/strong> from the bar menu or his favorite, the <strong>pollo donato<\/strong> from the dinner menu. \u201cIt\u2019s phenomenal,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>For dessert, he\u2019ll head to two of the North End\u2019s famed \u2013 and fiercely debated \u2013 pastry shops: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mikespastry.com\/\"><strong>Mike\u2019s Pastry<\/strong><\/a> (<em>300 Hanover St<\/em>.) and <a href=\"https:\/\/modernpastry.com\/\"><strong>Modern Pastry Shop<\/strong><\/a> (<em>257 Hanover St.<\/em>). Both pastry shops have been involved in a long-standing debate over which offers the best cannoli. Aluia doesn\u2019t have a favorite and encourages people to try out both and decide for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho has the best? I always tell people, get one of each, and then you decide. They\u2019re both people we grew up with. Built in 1680, it was the home of Paul Revere and his family from 1770 to 1800. It\u2019s an iconic landmark in Boston and the nation, and holds personal significance for Aluia, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother\u2019s house, her back window, faces Paul Revere\u2019s House in North Square,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Aluia will end his day at the <strong>grand procession<\/strong> of Saint Anthony\u2019s Feast, which takes place on Sunday. The grand procession is a highlight of the feast weekend and begins at 11:30 a.m. The statue of Saint Anthony is carried by eight men at a time for ten hours throughout the streets of the North End to allow devotees to pin donations to the saint.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s the confetti, balloons, marching bands, and we visit people\u2019s homes and businesses, and they make donations to the saint.
