Nearly 40 years later, he now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2024\/01\/kevin-smith-is-battling-to-keep-his-nj-childhood-movie-afloat.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">co-owns<\/a> the former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2024\/01\/kevin-smith-is-battling-to-keep-his-nj-childhood-movie-afloat.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Atlantic Cinemas<\/a> with friends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OE4MX3X25FF2DPBAGW7X2MPXLQ\">On Saturday, he\u2019s premiering the film at their Atlantic Highlands theater, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2024\/01\/kevin-smith-is-battling-to-keep-his-nj-childhood-movie-afloat.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SModcastle Cinemas<\/a>, as a benefit for the theater. So yes, fans can watch a movie set exactly where they\u2019re sitting \u2014 only in 1986.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"B67MGL3UAFC45N3UJMB64HZCNQ\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2024\/07\/see-trailer-for-kevin-smiths-the-430-movie-filmed-in-his-nj-movie-theater.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The 4:30 Movie<\/a>,\u201d starring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2022\/09\/clerks-iii-is-here-kevin-smith-on-his-nj-homecoming-and-why-its-his-best-movie-yet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Austin Zajur<\/a> (\u201dClerks III\u201d) and a group of young actors, is a story of teen shenanigans, summer love and a passion for the movies bolstered by supporting roles and cameos from lots of familiar faces of Smith\u2019s filmography.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LYIMW6JMZRFOTHDPTLW3LNRKSU\">Smith has always mined his youth for stories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2CUSIMHLYRBARFZLDBSU3P25IQ\">The wellspring for his work has been the early \u201990s. This time, he\u2019s going back further \u2014 to what it was like when he was 16.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IG2PZYU24ZGUZG6IRTADTXGFUY\">Smith\u2019s movie, which opens in theaters Sept. 13, unfolds over the course of a single summer day in 1986.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4G2TKKJILRAOLCZ3G4KQ6CTQYA\">The lead character, Brian David, is so named because that was originally supposed to be Smith\u2019s name before his parents went with Kevin Patrick.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5DKZ4Y33KNDMNLYNWQ6DDSJPNM\">\u201cMy parents changed it at the last second because there was another Brian David already in the nursery at the hospital,\u201d says Smith, 54, who was born in Red Bank and grew up in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2021\/03\/kevin-smith-on-clerk-the-documentary-about-kevin-smith.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Highlands<\/a>. I saw \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/pluto.tv\/on-demand\/movies\/indiana-jones-and-the-raiders-of-the-lost-ark-1981-1-1?utm_medium=textsearch&#038;utm_source=google\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Raiders of the Lost Ark<\/a>\u2019 86 times in a movie theater. I only paid once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TRL2HVFOOVCVFKECKHVNDG4TEM\">And he would be fine with other people doing it at his theater, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EONX2WO5CVEWRKMSAQGIL7BX6M\">\u201cWe\u2019ll take any more bodies,\u201d he says. \u201cAs long as they\u2019re buying popcorn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZPWZSWZEERFTJGFEV756FDCRQY\">After Smith <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2022\/08\/clerks-director-kevin-smith-buying-nj-movie-theater-of-his-childhood-next-up-a-film-school.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bought the theater<\/a> with friends in 2022, he realized the potential for a production. Now, we had \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/movies\/deadpool-and-wolverine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deadpool &#038; Wolverine<\/a>\u2019 open on a Friday night, it was 43 tickets and that was pretty good for a first-release movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XFZOSHXM75HO7PBT5SXI5IDVXQ\">By contrast, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smodcastlecinemas.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SModcastle Cinemas<\/a> recently hosted Smith\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smodcastlecinemas.com\/movie\/Vulgarathon_2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vulgarthon<\/a> event which sold out four theaters \u2014 \u201c700 people watching all these (View) Askewniverse movies from nine o\u2019clock on Saturday morning till five o\u2019clock in the morning on Sunday,\u201d Smith says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"B3UNYPTSBBHZJB72F4XL26WWYI\">Special events, which cost more than a regular movie ticket, are the way Smith has tried to save the theater. The movie is based on Smith and his high school girlfriend. <span class=\"article__mm-image-credit\">Ralph Bavaro<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"article-heading\"><b>Fiction is reality<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QJ64CGYZ5VG5DGVFPDFG6GVPAM\">From the opening scenes of \u201cThe 4:30 Movie,\u201d Brian David\u2019s motivation is clear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ENCSCKCTIFET7KPQ6HVYDIV5OY\">He wants to ask his crush, Melody Barnegat, out on a date to the movies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"N7PMI4W3ENBEXCVYC5IA2CIFZU\">The two teens have a history \u2014 they made out last summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"57TOQFSE2VAA5OFGNQJFE4WTA4\">When Melody, played by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sienaagudong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Siena Agudong<\/a> (Netflix\u2019s \u201dResident Evil\u201d), accepts, he\u2019s overjoyed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KKK3EOJNNNGCDGAGNA2GM7F2EE\">\u201cI got a 24-karat case of love,\u201d he tells his tape recorder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CZI4F6TTMJFRLOEEX2NQQ4EJTE\">But there are more than a few roadblocks to their ultimate destination: the 4:30 movie at Atlantic Cinemas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TWTXMYHMIFG33HOPIBOR3F7IOY\">Smith says the young love storyline is inspired by his first date with his high school girlfriend, Kim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HKOQYJECGJABDIKCPQ3VC25KJI\">Melody works at a Chinese restaurant \u2014 so did Kim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IBZCJA5X75CSPL4MAIMYNCPG7A\">In fact, \u201cThe 4:30 Movie\u201d filmed in the same location, <a href=\"https:\/\/newbeijingrestaurantah.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Beijing Chinese Restaurant<\/a> on First Avenue \u2014 the same street as the theater \u2014 in Atlantic Highlands, as well as at Kim\u2019s actual backyard pool. (The New Jersey Motion Picture and TV Commission says the movie spent $2.4 million filming locally, in Atlantic Highlands, Leonardo and Long Branch.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ICJY2U7M5ZHUZLTDHDIIHVCVNQ\">The film\u2019s star, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/austinzajur\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Austin Zajur<\/a>, previously worked with Smith On \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2022\/09\/clerks-iii-is-here-kevin-smith-on-his-nj-homecoming-and-why-its-his-best-movie-yet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clerks III.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"C65S47UIFNHMXPABDP3PBWK7C4\">Zajur, the boyfriend of Smith\u2019s daughter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2019\/10\/kevin-smith-almost-died-he-stayed-alive-to-make-jay-and-silent-bob-reboot-next-clerks-iii-in-nj.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harley Quinn Smith<\/a>, was originally slated to have dialogue in the role of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2022\/09\/clerks-iii-is-here-kevin-smith-on-his-nj-homecoming-and-why-its-his-best-movie-yet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blockchain Coltrane<\/a> in the Quick Stop-set movie. (Smith then started hosting meetings of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2023\/04\/kevin-smith-reveals-mental-health-crisis-childhood-sexual-abuse-i-had-a-complete-break-with-reality.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Co-Dependents Anonymous<\/a> at the theater.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FQHVPEDL2ZBSBP2KA2NR5VWTVE\">\u201cMost of my life is spent lying in service of trying to communicate a feeling I had once, a memory that I had, an image in my head,\u201d Smith says. \u201cI was kind of torn, in an existential crisis kind of way, like, should I even be doing this anymore?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HJLUJAYC3VF55MSTFR7HBLCEXY\">Smith\u2019s wife has asked him why he hasn\u2019t been writing movies set in the present.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DU564EO2YBE35DYVLP5EP4IHRY\">\u201cBecause I don\u2019t live a relatable life anymore,\u201d he told her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5PKANTKBGNC4DFR2AZ3XWBR4W4\">\u201cI always kind of reach back because that\u2019s when I was a normal-ass human being,\u201d he says. \u201cI was a dreamer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6WYCPRKYHVBQDGYDIQUMH52GQM\">The director, who often visits his old childhood home and goes hiking nearby, says sentimentality is what drives him to say close with his past, with the young Kevin who delighted in whole days at the movies. The Kevin who would be over the moon to know that he gets to <i>live<\/i> at the movies (Smith, who resides in California, stays in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2024\/01\/kevin-smith-is-battling-to-keep-his-nj-childhood-movie-afloat.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">apartment above the theater<\/a> when he\u2019s in town).<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"STB2KWZ6WJD2NAEOSZWJB3ZDDY\">For Smith, standing on that same curb and the remnants of his old driveway never loses its potency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TKEGVLBRLVE7TITMDVEWEAY5MI\">\u201cI think I always returned to that address to honor the kid that started the journey,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ODAMYZ2HD5CS3AHZZ5BAQ2HMZM\">When he\u2019s standing outside his old house, he thinks of young Kevin wondering what he life was going to be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TJDX7IJFUZAFLJO45NC5VORHW4\">\u201cNow I know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RL3X4CJJJ5FIPM3BNCN7REYG2M\">In \u201cThe 4:30 Movie,\u201d Brian David encounters a theater employee (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/genirodriguez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genesis Rodriguez<\/a>) who has her eyes set on a career making movies. Positive reinforcement from a teacher in eighth grade helped to keep him going, but it was Smith\u2019s older sister, Virginia, who had the earliest influence on the budding writer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"N3LQDCPOSRAVZDAL7WHJOECHIU\">He was about 6 years old when he found a composition notebook under her bed. Inside was a drawing of Virginia and her friends, along with a story \u2014 \u201cThe Secrets of the Cellar Door.\u201d She was writing a book.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JIVJQIK7MNFSBEJ6RRHLJYTX5E\">\u201cI was so, like, incensed by this,\u201d Smith says. \u201cI was like \u2018you can\u2019t just write a book. You have to ask the government first.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DNM3NAFANNGRRNX4S4SAT2N6CM\">Virginia clued him in \u2014 anyone could write anytime. No one had to ask for permission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"V57NE5TFUFFBHL2MYRABHYW6LQ\">\u201cShe always seemed to think I had potential,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HBNHR7LBN5AW7PZD5364LYHTDE\">After Smith saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2021\/03\/kevin-smith-on-clerk-the-documentary-about-kevin-smith.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Richard Linklater<\/a>\u2019s movie \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/play.max.com\/movie\/22615c3f-6232-44b4-85ca-1572614555c3?utm_source=universal_search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Slacker<\/a>\u201d on his 21st birthday in 1991, he told her how it made him think he wanted to be a filmmaker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FCME62XZNJEK7BUDT4EYV3TR3Y\">Her advice:<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TRQOZ74PHVDJLFOROJR3PWFZ7Q\">\u201cBe a filmmaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JOSK64ZHEBDYNI3GOGGX4YMB54\">The message: he was already a filmmaker. He just hadn\u2019t made a film yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FJWAWWZWSREUDFD4RFAAOVSN3E\">\u201cIt sounded like corny-ass Tony Robbins type of advice and stuff, but, you know, damn if it wasn\u2019t true,\u201d Smith says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UTIM7QXXR5EXJNKACU64N2CF3Q\">When he was writing the scene between Brian David and the theater employee, he didn\u2019t realize he was writing about his sister. But when someone pointed it out to him, he knew it was true.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GOIKV4CJJNCDLMHICOIUM5YB3E\">His first movie, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/watch\/382722?source=35\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clerks<\/a>,\u201d released in 1994, proved to be his ticket to Hollywood. The most recent installment in that story, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2022\/09\/clerks-iii-is-here-kevin-smith-on-his-nj-homecoming-and-why-its-his-best-movie-yet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clerks III<\/a>,\u201d arrived 28 years later, in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6Z5TYMPA7FHGNAFPYPZNF6IUJI\">Smith\u2019s next View Askewniverse film will be another chapter in the story of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2019\/10\/kevin-smith-almost-died-he-stayed-alive-to-make-jay-and-silent-bob-reboot-next-clerks-iii-in-nj.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jay and Silent Bob<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"U2V6N6CYHFFSXLZZCQI6XXQGDU\">As \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/watch\/382722?source=35\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clerks<\/a>\u201d turns 30 this fall, the characters do, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZKABOMKRLZCPTALIQULZCJUDG4\">In \u201cJay and Silent Bob: Store Wars,\u201d which Smith calls a \u201cflat-out comedy,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2021\/02\/kevin-smith-says-jay-and-silent-bob-are-getting-a-weed-store.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">marijuana dispensary<\/a> opens across the street from the popular Jersey duo\u2019s own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2022\/09\/clerks-iii-is-here-kevin-smith-on-his-nj-homecoming-and-why-its-his-best-movie-yet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weed store<\/a>, last seen in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2022\/09\/clerks-iii-is-here-kevin-smith-on-his-nj-homecoming-and-why-its-his-best-movie-yet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clerks III.<\/a>\u201d (RST THC, former home of RST Video.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZBK77KZSEZC6RB7AVLQ6BPNE2Q\">Jay and Bob have to contend with the younger owners of the rival store, \u201cbasically Jay and Silent Bob\u2019s opposites in every way, shape or form,\u201d Smith says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"X6W6VQHI65CMLGVDM3ZTKV7PJY\">In the coming months, he hopes to film the movie in New Jersey, where it all began.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2CSOA66VZBAGPBJAEXX7PUQCD4\">For now, the director is reflecting on the connection between his Catholic upbringing and those childhood days spent in his other church \u2014 the movies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LI4FEQJKLVGDNGMGOIDBMLD75I\">\u201cAt the end of the day,\u201d he says, \u201cit\u2019s just us telling each other stories that give us hope and keep us hanging on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6F4VBASZ6RBXFFWQXMG5ONXSKM\"><i>\u201cThe 4:30 Movie,\u201d rated R, will premiere at <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smodcastlecinemas.com\/movie\/The_430_Movie__World_Premiere_Benefit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>SModcastle Cinemas<\/i><\/a><i> in Atlantic Highlands Saturday, Aug. 24 at 4:30 p.m., with appearances from Kevin Smith and the cast.<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MR5F4SNP4BAY3OKV234MFN2G3A\"><i>The movie, which runs 1 hour and 27 minutes, will open in theaters Sept. 13.
