[Survey]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-8864793242727901\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>An informal Patch survey shows about half of readers won\u2019t go gently into that good night when daylight saving time ends on Sunday, Nov. 3.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>The results of the pulse <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/us\/across-america\/daylight-saving-time-should-we-abandon-or-keep-it-year-round-survey\">survey<\/a>, distributed in Patch newsletters, are generally in keeping with what scientific polls have shown. We\u2019re nearly divided on whether to make daylight saving or standard the year-round permanent time. <\/p>\n<p>Among 511 readers, almost half (49 percent) who responded to and commented on our survey favored daylight saving time as the permanent time. Slightly fewer (43 percent) favor year-round standard time. About 8 percent want to continue \u201cspringing forward and falling back.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ContentBlocks_CardDetail__SubscribeBlock__4zBcQ ContentBlocks_CardDetail__SubscribeBlock--mobile__18tT_\">\n<section class=\"styles_SubscribeForm__0dj5n\">\n<h2 class=\"styles_SubscribeForm__title__F_olP\">Find out what&#8217;s happening in Across America<span class=\"styles_SubscribeForm__title--nextLine__FTO3K\">with free, real-time updates from Patch.<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>Common among the responses were variations of this: Whatever! Just decide something! <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever is chosen, just keep it the same. Stop changing the clocks!\u201d an <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/virginia\/ashburn\">Ashburn (Virginia) Patch<\/a> reader said. \u201cI literally have to take off the Monday and Tuesday after the spring forward, or my work suffers for a week. It takes me that long to adjust.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ContentBlocks_CardDetail__SubscribeBlock__4zBcQ ContentBlocks_CardDetail__SubscribeBlock--desktop__oN6vv\">\n<section class=\"styles_SubscribeForm__0dj5n\">\n<h2 class=\"styles_SubscribeForm__title__F_olP\">Find out what&#8217;s happening in Across America<span class=\"styles_SubscribeForm__title--nextLine__FTO3K\">with free, real-time updates from Patch.<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/california\/temecula\">Temecula (California) Patch<\/a> reader subscribes to the logic of KISS \u2014 \u201ckeep it simple, stupid\u201d and claimed to be tired of \u201cchanging the clocks and acclimating to the change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/bridgewater\">Bridgewater (New Jersey) Patch<\/a> reader offered this: \u201cIt not only is annoying for people, it\u2019s also annoying if anyone has pets to get used to the time change. Just keep it the same all year.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/hillsborough\">Hillsborough (New Jersey) Patch<\/a> reader has a different idea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy don\u2019t we just split the time? Instead of an hour, just do half an hour and then leave it like that,\u201d the person said. \u201cEach side gets something and no more changing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>Daylight saving time was first implemented in the United States in 1918, but it lasted only seven months before being repealed. President Franklin Roosevelt reintroduced it during World War II. \u201cWar Time,\u201d as it was known, aimed to conserve fuel and energy by extending daylight hours for industrial activity in support of the war effort. It was in effect from February 1942 until September 1945.<\/p>\n<p>DST became a regular practice following the Uniform Time Act of 1966. There was a brief period of permanent DST in 1974, a response to the 1973 energy crisis. However, it was unpopular and did not achieve its intended energy conservation goals.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Killed The Drive-In\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Some readers groused about what they see as the folly of daylight saving time. Others grumbled about DST as a crime against nature.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/manalapan\">Manalapan (New Jersey) Patch<\/a> reader who finds the twice-a-year clock changes both physically and psychologically disruptive said the mid-20th century wartime argument for DST \u201cis no longer applicable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDST does not, as has often been purported, benefit farming and agriculture,\u201d the reader said. \u201cRevolutionary advances in technology have also made DST irrelevant, insofar as we have other means and resources that, if used intelligently, negate the rationale for DST.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>Agricultural benefits were never the government\u2019s sales pitch to the American people to embrace DST. In fact, many livestock farmers oppose it. One reason: If cows are accustomed to being milked at 5 a.m., milking would have to start an hour earlier during DST. Farmers who have grain operations are less affected, and may benefit from more daylight at the end of the day during planting to harvest times.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/michigan\/ferndale\">Ferndale (Michigan) Patch<\/a> reader heard that myth about the origins of DST.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBS,\u201d the reader said. \u201cMy grandfather said, \u2018The cows could not tell time. It was for the golfers!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Ferndale reader is not a fan of DST, saying that extending daylight later into the evening \u201ckilled the drive-in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Energy-conservation goals that made sense when many Americans didn\u2019t have electricity and were burning gas, kerosene or whale oil don\u2019t mesh with modern realities, a <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/massachusetts\/milton\">Milton (Massachusetts) Patch<\/a> reader said. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>\u201cNow, if it\u2019s dark for 16 hours per day, what difference does it make if the lights are on in the morning or evening?\u201d the reader said. \u201cDon\u2019t make us change the clocks and mess up our biorhythms twice a year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbandon this practice,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/maryland\/columbia\">Columbia (Maryland) Patch<\/a> reader said. \u201cIt\u2019s antiquated and unnecessary in modern times. Why mess with people\u2019s circadian rhythm twice a year?\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Government Holding This In Limbo\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s 2024,\u201d said a <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/minnesota\/woodbury\">Woodbury (Minnesota) Patch<\/a> reader who doesn\u2019t have an opinion on whether permanent standard or daylight saving time is better. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that we are still doing this seems ridiculous. This is obviously something lawmakers agree on \u2014 for once,\u201d the reader said, adding the rhetorical question, \u201cAre we really surprised our government is holding this in limbo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With rare unanimity early last year, the Senate passed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/senate-bill\/582\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sunshine Protection Act<\/a> that would make DST the year-round time. Health experts say the now-stalled bill has it backward, and that standard time should be made permanent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/connecticut\/bridgeport\">Bridgeport (Connecticut) Patch<\/a> said either permanent DST or standard \u201cwould be fine with me, but no more turning the clock forward or backward, please.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the people, not the businesses, who [Congress] should be listening to,\u201d the person said.<\/p>\n<p>Multiple readers seized on the physical and mental health effects associated with the current practice, though they differed on what the permanent time should be if it were abandoned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHealth comes first! Consistent sleep cycles ward off serious health issues. Respect nature\u2019s timeline,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/maryland\/towson\">Towson (Maryland) Patch<\/a> reader said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suffer the entire time we change clocks to standard time, as do many others,\u201d said a <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/massachusetts\/across-ma\">Massachusetts Patch<\/a> reader who wants to see year-round DST. \u201cIt is always a huge health (mental and physical) adjustment when we change back to standard time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>The reader also cited economic advantages and utility savings associated with DST and advanced a not-often-heard but factually true argument: Because it can place stress on delicate gear mechanisms, \u201cit\u2019s not mechanically good for our clocks to turn the hands backward.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/t\/ct\/hartford-ct\">Hartford (Connecticut) Patch<\/a> reader simply said, \u201cDon\u2019t mess with Mother Nature.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018America Needs Those Few Extra Hours\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/illinois\/across-il\">Illinois Patch <\/a>reader who lives in the Chicago area prefers year-round DST and said \u201cpeople will adapt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFarmers can alter their time based on daylight. The working population can allow for flexible hours and factory workers can do the same. The kids can start school later so they won\u2019t be catching the bus in the dark,\u201d the reader said. \u201cScandinavian countries are dark more than half the day in winter, fall and spring and are the happiest people in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/ohio\/across-oh\">Ohio Patch<\/a> reader who lives in Westerville said daylight until 9:30 p.m. makes it safer for kids\u2019 activities in the summer. And the reader also thinks year-round DST would be good for America in general.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>\u201cAmerica spends too much time indoors,\u201d the reader said. \u201cThat feeling of having summer hours left to enjoy after work \u2014 America needs those few extra hours. We are a mess of a country and need the relief of just a few short hours of daylight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople would go outside after dinner for walks, feel safer, shop or eat out, go to sporting events,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/virginia\/herndon\">Herndon (Virginia) Patch<\/a> reader said, listing the virtues of permanent DST.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/pennsylvania\/across-pa\">Pennsylvania Patch<\/a> reader who favors DST as the permanent time doesn\u2019t mind changing the clocks and said it doesn\u2019t take that long to physically adjust to the time switch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I do hate the adjustment to more darkness,\u201d the Bristol resident said. \u201cI would be happy on daylight saving time all year. But, if we have to change clocks just to keep daylight saving time, I\u2019m OK with it. I would hate being stuck on standard time all the time, especially in the summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/california\/los-angeles\">Los Angeles Patch<\/a> reader who isn\u2019t looking forward to the end of daylight saving time said \u201cit\u2019s depressing when it gets dark at 4 p.m., adding to what can often already be a depressing season of the year \u2014 winter.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>\u201cIt is awful to get out of school or work to find it\u2019s already dark. It saps your energy, mood and ambition,\u201d the reader went on. \u201cFalling back messes with my mood and my health. I\u2019d much rather have it be dark and moving toward light in the morning than have it dark so early in the afternoon, making what feels like a much longer night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing dark so early in the winter is very depressing, and there\u2019s no reason for it,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TomsRiverPatch\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Toms River (New Jersey) Patch<\/a> reader said. \u201cI\u2019m sure an extra hour of daylight in the evening when virtually everyone is awake, is more beneficial than the extra hour of light in the morning when the majority may still be sleeping.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Dark Mornings Vs. Dark Playtime<\/h3>\n<p>One of the things that sunk America\u2019s experiment with permanent DST in the 1970s was the specter of children going to school before the sun was up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPitch black out late into the morning,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/illinois\/chicago\">Chicago Patch<\/a> reader recalled. \u201cIt was abandoned as a foolhardy idea to save energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents do not need to be waiting for school buses in the dark with so many reckless drivers racing to work because they are late,\u201d said a <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/virginia\/fredericksburg\">Fredericksburg (Virginia) Patch<\/a> reader who favors permanent standard time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/michigan\/farmington-mi\">Farmington-Farmington Hills (Michigan) Patch<\/a> reader agrees the darker mornings that come with DST in the winter \u201care dangerous for kids walking to the bus stop,\u201d and also pointed out the benefits of morning light in setting circadian rhythm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not healthy for us to switch back and forth twice a year,\u201d the reader said. \u201cAnd remember, Michigan is so far west in [the Eastern Time Zone] that compared to states like Maine, we are practically on daylight savings time when we are on normal time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Concern about how DST affects school children was prominent in survey responses, but not everyone agrreed on whether dark mornings or dark afternoons put them most at risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving children in school in the dark afternoon hours is traumatic,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-york\/pelham\">Pelham (New York) Patch<\/a> reader said, \u201cDark mornings are better than dark playtime on the playground,\u201d the reader said. \u201cLet\u2019s keep our times as they are, since we naturally already have dark afternoons due to the season changes. It\u2019s better for businesses, children and parents,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-york\/new-york-city\">New York City Patch<\/a> reader said the return to standard time in the late fall and winter months is a buzz kill. During DST, \u201cI would go to a restaurant with friends, shop, do laundry, go to the hair salon and take walks \u2014 all after work if it\u2019s light outside,\u201d the reader said. \u201cOnce it\u2019s dark, I just want to be home.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/maryland\/across-md\">Maryland Patch<\/a> reader who prefers DST as the permanent time said it allows for more daylight hours for things that matter in life. \u201cI\u2019m more productive in the evenings and can spend more time with family before feeling tired,\u201d the reader said .\u201cSafety of kids doing after-school activities is another reason to stick with daylight savings.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Short Shrift For Night Shift<\/h3>\n<p>Night-shift workers get the short shrift with the current system and \u201chave to work an hour more or less\u201d when the clocks change, said a <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/parsippany\">Parsippany (New Jersey) Patch<\/a> reader who prefers standard as the permanent time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hate having to live in daylight saving and always feel better when the time reverts to standard,\u201d an <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/georgia\/atlanta\">Atlanta Patch<\/a> reader said.<\/p>\n<p>Readers who like more light at the beginning of their days welcome the end of daylight saving time. \u201cI am a morning person and like the daylight earlier rather than later. It is much easier to get up in the morning with light than without,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/wisconsin\/wauwatosa\">Wauwatosa (Wisconsin) Patch<\/a> reader said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been to Sweden in mid-summer and in mid-winter,\u201d the person said. \u201cWow, at least we don&#8217;t have to deal with 21-22 hour swings of either daylight or night. Our issue is really minor in the grand scheme of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/florida\/miami\">Miami Patch<\/a> reader thinks year-round standard time \u201cfeels more natural,\u201d saying it is \u201ceasier to wake up with the sun and easier to fall asleep when it\u2019s been dark for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/massachusetts\/boston\">Boston Patch<\/a> reader compared malaise after the twice-a-year time switch to jet lag, with similar effects \u2014 \u201cbad for performance, bad for health and even causing more traffic accidents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThus,\u201d the reader continued, \u201cstop this human control over nature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaylight saving time throws my body, mind and sleep for a loop,\u201d an <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/illinois\/aurora\">Aurora (Illinois) Patch<\/a> reader said. \u201cI cringe in March and I\u2019m elated in November.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop messing with Mother Nature!\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/warren\">Warren (New Jersey) Patch<\/a> reader said. \u201cSeasonal daylight and nighttime duration changes are gradual and easier for humans to adapt to.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>Or at least stop fiddling with the clocks for the sake of parents and their infants, an <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/us\/across-america\">Across America Patch<\/a> reader said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoms don\u2019t like it because babies\u2019 schedules are all screwed up for weeks!\u201d the person said.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Strong Enough To Get Over It\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>One argument advanced by proponents of both the current system and year-round DST is that more light at the end of the day means more time for activities that cost money.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/across-nj\">New Jersey Patch <\/a>reader thinks the current system works fine. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not worried about the commerce. In this country, as it is, we\u2019re all struggling and people work all different hours now. It really doesn\u2019t make a difference whether you\u2019re shopping at night or the morning,\u201d the reader said, adding, \u201cSuch stupid thinking.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>The current system also suits a <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-york\/bronxville\">Bronxville-Eastchester (New York) Patch<\/a> reader.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the days get longer, it\u2019s much better to have more daylight going into the evening. As the days get shorter, we need to have the daylight hours start before 7 a.m.,\u201d the reader said, adding, \u201cPeople make too big a deal about losing or gaining an hour \u2014 it\u2019s a bit like having jet lag.
