She doesn\u2019t cook, so I told her to buy a cooked one at a grocery store.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>JoJo\u2019s friend assured her the situation was under control, but showed up the night of the dinner with a partially cooked turkey in a box that needed a couple more hours in the oven.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone was there, hungry and ready to eat,\u201d JoJo said. \u201cI had to figure out ways to stall the dinner by singing karaoke, refilling wine glasses, having a pet turkey costume contest \u2014 anything to keep people distracted while we finished cooking the turkey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shannon in Illinois recalled the year the electric roaster she was using went on the fritz, leaving her with a mostly uncooked turkey<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo dinner was served hours behind schedule,\u201d said Shannon, who reads <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/illinois\/joliet\">Joliet Patch<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/illinois\/plainfield\">Plainfield Patch<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/illinois\/naperville\">Naperville Patch<\/a>. \u201cSome people had to leave before it was done.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>No one threw up, though, so that\u2019s a win. And there were no fires, another win. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/education-and-research\/home-fire-safety\/thanksgiving\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">No. 1 Thanksgiving fail<\/a> is a cooking fire, an estimated 1,600 of which occur every day on the holiday itself.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018I Started The House On Fire\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Paula, who reads <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/massachusetts\/brookline\">Brookline Patch<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/massachusetts\/newton\">Newton Patch<\/a>, both in Massachusetts, has managed to hold on to tender feelings for Thanksgiving despite every host\u2019s worst nightmare. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started a house fire at 2 a.m. that destroyed the kitchen,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLong story,\u201d Paula continued. \u201cI pre-set self-cleaning, oven thermostat failed, the temperature climbed to close to 1,000 degrees F., setting fire to the stuffed bird inside which then spread to the rest of the kitchen. We spent the rest of the night at a hotel and had hamburgers at McDonald\u2019s the next day. Our 12 guests were none to happy either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thanksgiving is \u201cstill my favorite holiday, although we now plan dinner at an upscale restaurant,\u201d Paula said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>Having gotten through twin fires that erupted on Thanksgiving Day that remarkably didn\u2019t require the fire department\u2019s hook and ladder truck, <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/wisconsin\/waukesha\">Waukesha (Wisconsin) Patch<\/a> reader Pam can relate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI left ham basting sauce on the stove on low. My husband was grilling the ham outside. Both caught fire at the same time,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>When the smoke alarms began wailing, no one knew the source. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were all gathered in the family room in our basement,\u201d Pam said. \u201cI ran upstairs, and the kitchen was full of smoke. My stepson ran up to my husband at the same time saying the grill was on fire! He thought the smoke alarm was for that fire. Luckily both fires were put out without the fire department \u2014 a memorable Thanksgiving!\u201d Upper<a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/pennsylvania\/uppermoreland\"> Moreland-Willow Grove (Pennsylvania) Patch<\/a> reader Kate\u2019s Thanksgiving fail also involves a fire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI reach across the stove to place a casserole dish onto the stove top \u2014 with a towel as an oven mitt,\u201d she said. \u201cThe towel caught fire and I burnt four fingers (with blisters) right as we were sitting down to dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>Dinner was late, and not just because of Kate\u2019s sore fingers. Three members of her immediate family are volunteer firefighters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I put the last side dish on the table, the alert for a fire went out. It was a working fire. It would turn out to be the third holiday meal that was preempted that year,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018I Boiled The Potatoes Away\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>For any first-time Thanksgiving cooks approaching the holiday with anxiety, Grammie in Connecticut is living proof all fails are survivable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn my first Thanksgiving, I used the hot liquid from the turkey pan to make gravy,\u201d said Grammie, who reads <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/connecticut\/enfield\">Enfield Patch<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/connecticut\/vernon\">Vernon Patch<\/a>. \u201cI mixed it in a container and put the cover on. I proceeded to shake the container and \u2026 It exploded all over the ceiling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t do that. \u201cI learned my lesson that day,\u201d Grammie said. It never happened again. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>\u201cI love Thanksgiving, having friends and family gather for a great meal and spending time together,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/california\/livermore\">Livermore (California) Patch<\/a> reader Andrea handed responsibility for cooking potatoes to her daughter after her son-in-law had to rush to the store and buy instant potato flakes for a quick fix.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI boiled potatoes to mash, but cooked too long and boiled them away,\u201d Andrea said. \u201cI still had the lid on the pot to drain them and they were white water down the drain!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added, \u201cThat was 15 years ago and I have still not lived it down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gravy fails are practically synonymous with Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>MS, a <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/rhode-island\/narragansett\">Narragansett-South Kingston (Rhode Island) Patch<\/a> reader, and her friend panicked when their husbands asked about the gravy just as the turkey was about to come out of the oven.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy friend and I had no clue nor interest,\u201d MS said \u201cGood thing Mrs. O\u2019Connor was there to step up with her cane and help us out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MS has since located an illustrated, step-by-step guide to making perfect gravy. Still, she said, \u201cEven though I entertain and cook, I\u2019d still rather have turkey and gravy at someone else\u2019s house.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018He Starts Eating It Off The Floor\u2019<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/connecticut\/brookfield\">Brookfield (Connecticut) Patch<\/a> reader Steph told a good one on her husband, whose contribution to the family dinner at her brother\u2019s was an especially beautiful pumpkin cheesecake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were all so excited to dig into it \u2014 it literally looked perfect and had not even a trace of the surface cracking that is so common with cheesecakes. My sister-in-law ate the first piece and was strangely quiet. I took the next piece and immediately realized that my husband had forgotten to add sugar,\u201d she said, adding:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>\u201cFun fact: Pumpkin and cream cheese really don\u2019t taste good together when left unsweetened. When it comes to food, looks can definitely be deceiving!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/maryland\/odenton\">Odenton-Severn (Maryland) Patch <\/a>reader Mary also has a pumpkin cheesecake fail. While returning the pan to the oven for a few more minutes, she dropped it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked my husband to help me clean it up; before actually helping to clean it up, he starts eating it off the floor (the parts that hadn\u2019t touched the floor) just like on \u2018Friends\u2019! I was up until about midnight making the second one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere in Illinois, a dog found good eating on the floor, too, according to Michele, who reads <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/illinois\/tinleypark\">Tinley Park Patch<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/illinois\/orlandpark\">Orland Park Patch<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy husband carved the turkey on a wooden carving board that overflowed with juices that seeped through the opening between the table leaves,\u201d Michele described the setup.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>\u201cOur little dog who was under the table enjoyed the shower of tasty juices being poured on him,\u201d she said. \u201cHe was quite a greasy mess by the time we ate dinner!\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Yum, Lighter Fluid-Seasoned Turkey<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/illinois\/buffalogrove\">Buffalo Grove (Illinois) Patch<\/a> reader John T. has a cautionary tale. Cooking the turkey on the grill using the indirect heat method over charcoal, he became concerned the piles of coals weren\u2019t hot enough. You know what\u2019s about to happen, don\u2019t you?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI squirted some fluid on each pile and put the lid back on thinking they would flame up and burn better,\u201d John T. said. \u201cWrong. The fluid just created clouds of white acrid smoke that enveloped the bird.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bird did not pass the taste test.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was horrible and tasted like lighter fluid,\u201d John T. said. \u201cI probably carved almost half of the meat away until I got to some that tasted OK.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>Also, John T. said, his turkey grilling days are over.<\/p>\n<h3>No One Needs This On Thanksgiving<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/maryland\/baltimore\">Baltimore Patch<\/a> reader Amanda invited her parents to Thanksgiving and was \u201csuper excited\u201d to show off her new home and cooking skills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI prepared the turkey, then hopped in the shower while I ran the dishwasher. Boy was that a mistake!\u201d Amanda said. \u201cTurns out the drain was partially clogged, and draining the shower and dishwasher at the same time was enough to make the plumbing back up and the toilet explode, sending water all over the bathroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A drain-cleaning company available on Thanksgiving Day \u201ccharged me $800 to pop the clog.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was able to salvage the dinner, however, and it ended up being a good meal, even if the bathroom floor was soaked,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<h3>Nothing Could Spoil This Thanksgiving<\/h3>\n<p>Thanksgiving 1995 was always destined to be memorable for Becca and her husband. The plan was the adoptive parents would pick up their son from his birth mother the Monday before the holiday and the whole family would welcome him at a special Thanksgiving celebration.<\/p>\n<p>Then the call came. The earliest they could pick up their son was Thanksgiving Day, said Becca, who reads <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-hampshire\/nashua\">Nashua Patch<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-hampshire\/merrimack\">Merrimack Patch<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-hampshire\/concord-nh&#038;\">Concord Patch<\/a>, all in New Hampshire.<\/p>\n<p>It was too late to move the dinner to someone else\u2019s house, so Becca got up early on Thanksgiving morning to put the turkey in the oven.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithin a couple of hours, the turkey was smelling done,\u201d she said. \u201cWe checked, and it was fully cooked on one side and raw on the other. It turns out the oven had been left on broil from the night before, and since I never use broil it never occurred to me to check. It\u2019s always on cook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Becca made a solid comeback from her Thanksgiving fail.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>\u201cI made a big ol\u2019 pot of spaghetti,\u201d she said. \u201cMy family was fine with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Hey, I Tried To Warn Him\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>As a newlywed, <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/us\/across-america\">Across America Patch<\/a> reader Ellen told her husband that going to her family\u2019s home for Thanksgiving was a bad idea.<\/p>\n<p>He insisted, and on the way, Ellen stopped at a fast-food place and ate. Hubs was confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe got there, and my mom said, \u2018Oh! You\u2019re here!\u2019 She proceeded to toss the turkey bologna onto the table along with a cheap loaf of bread. Then yucky fake butter spread was brought out and we were told, \u2018There ya go.\u201d He looked stunned. Hey, I tried to warn him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ellen is also so over Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>\u201cAs a woman, I don\u2019t attend,\u201d she said. \u201cYou see, I have ovaries and for some reason, it means I have to cook, clean, set tables, clean meat off carcasses and more all while the men sit in another room and watch football.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ellen was just getting started.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout the time the women get to rest, some man will say, \u2018Is there pie?\u2019 GAH! Also, men might say the words. \u2018But I helped, I took out the trash.\u2019 You will never hear a woman say, \u2018I helped<br \/>at Thanksgiving. I bet a man reading this doesn\u2019t get why <br \/>I helped\u2019 does not count.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNope,\u201d Ellen concluded, \u201cI\u2019d prefer a buffet where all the options are there and I am not the housemaid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lawrence isn\u2019t that guy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles_HTMLContent__LDG2k\">\n<p>\u201cAbout five years ago, my wife fell on a potato peel and broke her hip.
