credits read like a list of Hollywood blockbusters \u2014 \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com?id=126006X1587338&#038;xs=1&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hulu.com%2Fmovie%2Fjurassic-park-225d12ff-a04b-4bb6-b88b-6abb9d66dcb9%3Fentity_id%3D225d12ff-a04b-4bb6-b88b-6abb9d66dcb9\" target=\"_blank\">Jurassic Park<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Mission-Impossible-Tom-Cruise\/dp\/B000X4IRE4?tag=advancenj-20\" target=\"_blank\">Mission: Impossible<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/watch\/60004481?source=35\" target=\"_blank\">Spider-Man<\/a>\u201d among them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IX6ZBPWN2ZCKJEYLQTWRLJU5MY\">\u201cI like popcorn movies,\u201d Koepp says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FG2YZPN4XFCXFHBRQTKKROFOOM\">His new film \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2025\/01\/do-you-feel-a-presence-inside-steven-soderberghs-reverse-ghost-story-filmed-in-nj.html\" target=\"_blank\">Presence<\/a>,\u201d an unconventional haunted house movie directed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2025\/01\/do-you-feel-a-presence-inside-steven-soderberghs-reverse-ghost-story-filmed-in-nj.html\" target=\"_blank\">Steven Soderbergh<\/a>, was filmed entirely in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2025\/01\/do-you-feel-a-presence-inside-steven-soderberghs-reverse-ghost-story-filmed-in-nj.html\" target=\"_blank\">New Jersey home<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"W5HBJQHBGJF53DDELJWJRUQO5M\">Koepp\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2025\/01\/steven-spielbergs-new-ufo-movie-with-emily-blunt-is-filming-in-nj-casting-locals-see-the-details.html\" target=\"_blank\">upcoming film with Steven Spielberg<\/a> is also about to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2025\/01\/steven-spielbergs-new-ufo-movie-with-emily-blunt-is-filming-in-nj-casting-locals-see-the-details.html\" target=\"_blank\">film in Jersey<\/a>, while his official return to all things prehistoric is just months away in this summer\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurassicworld.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jurassic World: Rebirth<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"F6IXMP5KK5CXJH2AMQEB3GAXIE\">The writer-director sat down with NJ Advance Media to talk about the Jersey haunt that is \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2025\/01\/do-you-feel-a-presence-inside-steven-soderberghs-reverse-ghost-story-filmed-in-nj.html\" target=\"_blank\">Presence<\/a>,\u201d the Spielberg production, his \u201cJurassic\u201d comeback and more.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"article-heading\"><b>A new (Jersey) adventure with Steven Spielberg<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HJE75IWXRJDT3JJB42J253H7AM\">Koepp has been working with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2022\/11\/the-fabelmans-shows-how-steven-spielbergs-passion-for-film-ignited-in-nj.html?outputType=amp\" target=\"_blank\">Spielberg<\/a> for more than 30 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AC2E3CVD35GRNDD6G5ZUHB5FRU\">The first \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com?id=126006X1587338&#038;xs=1&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hulu.com%2Fmovie%2Fjurassic-park-225d12ff-a04b-4bb6-b88b-6abb9d66dcb9%3Fentity_id%3D225d12ff-a04b-4bb6-b88b-6abb9d66dcb9\" target=\"_blank\">Jurassic Park<\/a>\u201d movie \u2014 directed by Spielberg, co-written by Koepp and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michaelcrichton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Crichton<\/a> and based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michaelcrichton.com\/works\/jurassic-park\/\" target=\"_blank\">Crichton\u2019s novel<\/a> \u2014 hit theaters in 1993.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KUMD5UOZRNHDBKILR7YPAPUUTA\">Koepp also co-wrote Indiana Jones movies including the Spielberg-directed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com?id=126006X1587338&#038;xs=1&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.disneyplus.com%2Fmovies%2Findiana-jones-and-the-kingdom-of-the-crystal-skull%2F57O7IUX2CLrN%3FdistributionPartner%3Dgoogle\" target=\"_blank\">Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull<\/a>\u201d (2008).<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FVGX3SK7DBCC7EKKBITN6DBGP4\">\u201cHe wrote the story for this new thing that we\u2019re about to start shooting,\u201d Koepp says of the prolific, Oscar-winning director.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"H5WMFE6NQRCVXHRLYK7QY4CC7M\">The \u201cnew thing,\u201d Spielberg\u2019s upcoming movie, is set to film in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2025\/01\/steven-spielbergs-new-ufo-movie-with-emily-blunt-is-filming-in-nj-casting-locals-see-the-details.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cape May<\/a> this title: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2025\/01\/steven-spielbergs-new-ufo-movie-with-emily-blunt-is-filming-in-nj-casting-locals-see-the-details.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Dish<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6QHT3KNVSJFXHCOIO6EJYW4IUQ\">\u201cHe wrote the story and said \u2018what do you think of this?\u2019\u201d Koepp says of writing with Spielberg. \u201cAnd I said \u2018great. What if you did this, this and that?\u2019 And, you know, then we went from there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OQJ2PM35H5HKTCUNITYTOL5SLI\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2025\/01\/steven-spielbergs-new-ufo-movie-with-emily-blunt-is-filming-in-nj-casting-locals-see-the-details.html\" target=\"_blank\">Emily Blunt<\/a> (\u201dOppenheimer\u201d) stars in the movie alongside fellow Oscar nominee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2025\/01\/steven-spielbergs-new-ufo-movie-with-emily-blunt-is-filming-in-nj-casting-locals-see-the-details.html\" target=\"_blank\">Colman Domingo<\/a> (\u201dSing Sing\u201d), Emmy winner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2025\/01\/steven-spielbergs-new-ufo-movie-with-emily-blunt-is-filming-in-nj-casting-locals-see-the-details.html\" target=\"_blank\">Josh O\u2019Connor<\/a> (\u201dThe Crown\u201d), \u201cBad Sisters\u201d star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2025\/01\/steven-spielbergs-new-ufo-movie-with-emily-blunt-is-filming-in-nj-casting-locals-see-the-details.html\" target=\"_blank\">Eve Hewson<\/a> and Oscar winner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2025\/01\/steven-spielbergs-new-ufo-movie-with-emily-blunt-is-filming-in-nj-casting-locals-see-the-details.html\" target=\"_blank\">Colin Firth<\/a> (\u201dThe King\u2019s Speech\u201d).<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5WGP2ZJMPBESTMUWT5MBAEXFKQ\">Koepp is staying vague about the story\u2019s details, which have not been announced, but says he values the way Spielberg can collaborate without too much outside interference.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"R32R5NEX5BGRLHBBJKHEQAT75Y\">\u201cWhat\u2019s really great working with him is that it\u2019s pretty much just him,\u201d he says. \u201cThe big movies, you often get a lot of opinions from a lot of sources because there\u2019s a lot of money at stake. See the details.<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GCBLR4ODIFGTPFYF5YALJTM6JQ\">Spielberg\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/amblin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Amblin<\/a> and Universal are producing the film. A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2025\/01\/steven-spielbergs-new-ufo-movie-with-emily-blunt-is-filming-in-nj-casting-locals-see-the-details.html\" target=\"_blank\">open call for extras and background actors<\/a> sought locals in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2025\/01\/steven-spielbergs-new-ufo-movie-with-emily-blunt-is-filming-in-nj-casting-locals-see-the-details.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cape May <\/a>to take part in the production.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MSS43TCEZNHCHEVGXQFFN3C2YI\">\u201cWhen it\u2019s Steven\u2019s and he\u2019s fully involved, they tend to leave him alone,\u201d Koepp says. \u201cUniversal\u2019s had some good and helpful points but it\u2019s kind of just the two of you making it up. And I do feel sometimes that the focus of that viewpoint being limited to just a couple people is really good for the movie. Same with Soderbergh. So they were early in my career, quite formative, and a great deal of fun. Those were really fun movies to make. It\u2019s a great sandbox to play in. And I\u2019m delighted by how long interest in those kinds of movies has hung around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UQW5MG3EDRE53EI3XZOQUU3R3Y\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm2284484\/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_2_nm_6_in_0_q_gareth%2520edwards\" target=\"_blank\">Gareth Edwards<\/a> (\u201dThe Creator,\u201d \u201cMonsters,\u201d \u201cRogue One: A Star Wars Story\u201d) helmed \u201cJurassic World: Rebirth,\u201d which follows the 2022 movie \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com?id=126006X1587338&#038;xs=1&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hulu.com%2Fmovie%2Fjurassic-world-dominion-e94692e5-d2c9-4a7c-b1af-7b0b326f072d%3Fentity_id%3De94692e5-d2c9-4a7c-b1af-7b0b326f072d\" target=\"_blank\">Jurassic World Dominion<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TLDNZTQK5NAMXMKMQVSUWVX4EQ\">\u201cIt seemed to me, when we started talking about another one, that they seem to change tone and characters every three movies,\u201d Koepp says. \u201cSo that, to me, said well, this is the start something new. Let\u2019s go with all new characters and let\u2019s have a slight change in the tone. So we did that, and that chance to start over and create something new while still working in this obviously familiar thing, we didn\u2019t want to change a bunch of rules. We wanted to say, no, we\u2019re still in the world that we left after the last movie, but that world has changed. How has it changed? And who are the new people that are involved, and why? But since the camera is now a character in the story, I had to. The story is as much about the conflicts that haunt a family as it is a ghost tale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2OI5WUO5GJA4TD7JQBFBIATS4Q\">Liang plays Chloe, a teen mourning her best friend. He tries to distance himself from his sister and her ideas about the ghost haunting their new house.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EFMKSM4IQRGUTLULFWXXZENAZQ\">One of the \u201crules\u201d Koepp developed for the story was that people would be more susceptible to sensing the \u201cpresence\u201d if, like Chloe, they\u2019ve experienced trauma that opens up their perception. It\u2019s a rule grounded in real life, a place where the ghosts of trauma don\u2019t have to be supernatural to change people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SIWHEEUJOFGZRDWRENKDTQ63LQ\">\u201cThey become sensitive to the pain of people around them because they know what that suffering is like,\u201d Koepp says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2YVZXYQKP5HOLF4EWPGOXN636E\">He found it interesting that in standard ghost stories, we automatically accept that a spirit from, say, 1892, might be haunting an old house. For Koepp, that means that such a ghost can move forward in time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LBFOEYR655HOTAISPSVP3NEQBM\">\u201cI thought \u2018well, if we\u2019re saying that time is not linear, why can\u2019t it go back?\u2019 &#8230; So I just said \u2018let\u2019s extend that rule.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"article-heading\"><b>A personal ghost story<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4L6TN6U5DRHZHCIMBOAYJQZRDI\">Koepp has written and directed other movies that deal with spirits and \u201cthe other side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LBYAGRFQNVH37D6FEHLNEHXNEU\">They include the supernatural thriller \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/tubitv.com\/movies\/313931\/stir-of-echoes?start=true&#038;tracking=google-feed&#038;utm_source=google-feed\" target=\"_blank\">Stir of Echoes<\/a>\u201d (1999) with Kevin Bacon (adapted from Richard Matheson\u2019s 1958 book) and the comedy \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pluto.tv\/us\/on-demand\/movies\/59975056a09fd13c9b5907ad?utm_medium=textsearch&#038;utm_source=google\" target=\"_blank\">Ghost Town<\/a>\u201d (2008) with Ricky Gervais.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"O7E4ITTFZZCJLLHSJS6J2CYYHY\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/2025\/01\/do-you-feel-a-presence-inside-steven-soderberghs-reverse-ghost-story-filmed-in-nj.html\" target=\"_blank\">Presence<\/a>,\u201d he says, combined various elements and scenarios he likes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ARNJTLOXBRER7M2AVUOOH5FCOI\">\u201cI love a story that takes place in a confined space,\u201d he says, pointing to his previous work in the thriller \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Panic-Room-Jodie-Foster\/dp\/B000JCMYG2?tag=advancenj-20\" target=\"_blank\">Panic Room<\/a>\u201d (2002), directed by David Fincher and starring Jodie Foster, Kristen Stewart, Forest Whitaker, Jared Leto and Dwight Yoakam.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article__image\">\n<div class=\"article__image-wrapper\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 500px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/resizer\/v2\/CPXTTIVDZNBBFPJBAFDQ77AHZU.jpg?auth=bf1b37489489f715b1dff593c365511a2bdb47620e6c62fb9977b8d45f87ae93&#038;width=500&#038;quality=90 500w\"\/><source media=\"(max-width: 800px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/resizer\/v2\/CPXTTIVDZNBBFPJBAFDQ77AHZU.jpg?auth=bf1b37489489f715b1dff593c365511a2bdb47620e6c62fb9977b8d45f87ae93&#038;width=800&#038;quality=90 800w\"\/><source srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/resizer\/v2\/CPXTTIVDZNBBFPJBAFDQ77AHZU.jpg?auth=bf1b37489489f715b1dff593c365511a2bdb47620e6c62fb9977b8d45f87ae93&#038;width=1280&#038;quality=90 1280w\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/resizer\/v2\/CPXTTIVDZNBBFPJBAFDQ77AHZU.jpg?auth=bf1b37489489f715b1dff593c365511a2bdb47620e6c62fb9977b8d45f87ae93&#038;width=500&#038;quality=90\" sizes=\"auto, 50vw\" fetchpriority=\"low\" alt=\"LL\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"article__image-content\" height=\"600\" width=\"300\"\/><\/picture><figcaption class=\"article__image-caption\">\n<p class=\"article__mm-image-caption-text\">Lucy Liu in &#8220;Presence&#8221; as Rebekah, the mother of the family at the center of the movie. &#8220;Writing about family dynamics is the most interesting thing to me because we all know it,&#8221; Koepp says.<br \/>\n<span class=\"article__mm-image-credit\">Steven Soderbergh | Neon<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ITKC5X6APVBQLO3MANHCKWG5BU\">While people can leave the house in \u201cPresence,\u201d the ghost does not. And while the film has an interesting take on time in general, all the events onscreen take place within a relatively short time frame.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZRBGKGBLU5GJBCOFD3XHZOMCKQ\">\u201cI like the stories that are confined in terms of time &#8230; over a few days or 24 hours,\u201d Koepp says. \u201cI love all those, I call them bottles. And so that was good. But I also liked one thing that the horror renaissance of the last 10 or 15 years has done. It allows us to sort of smuggle in other kinds of stories into the context of a scary movie, or in our case, more of a spooky movie. And I like the idea of being able to tell a family drama.
